The Last Emperor 3D 1987 The film follows two biographical lines the life of the former emperor of China and Manchukuo now prisoner number 981 in a Chinese prison and his memories from childhood to his capture by Soviet troops in 1945. In 1950 a train with prisoners arrives at the station and some recognize the former emperor. After a suicide attempt he is saved by the head of the prison. His memories trace his early years in the Forbidden City his marriage to Wan Rong his exile and his eventual cooperation with the Japanese as emperor of Manchukuo where he realizes his power is only nominal. After being arrested by Soviet paratroopers he is held in a Chinese prison where he is forced to work eventually becoming a gardener. Released under amnesty in 1959 he later witnesses the Cultural Revolution and visits the Forbidden City as a tourist before his death in 1967.
