Miss Sadie Thompson 3D 1953. The story about sex, sin, and salvation in the tropics returns to the screen in a modernized version filmed in 3D and Technicolor. Shooting took place on a real island in Hawaii. Sadie is a humble woman forced out of a Honolulu brothel by Davidson, a man set on ridding the islands of sin. She avoids deportation to San Francisco, where she is wanted for another crime, and boards a ship for New Caledonia. The ship is quarantined on an island occupied mostly by Marines. Rita Hayworth captures the essence of Sadie Thompson, even removing makeup and wearing plain costumes to fit the character. José Ferrer plays Alfred Davidson, no longer a religious fanatic but a different kind of zealot. Aldo Ray plays Sergeant O’Hara, who makes an honest woman out of Sadie. The direction reaches a frenzied jazz tempo that matches the modernization.
