Yakel 3D 2012 This documentary visits the Yakel tribe on the island of Pentecost in Vanuatu. The community preserves ancient customs and avoids modern technology. Men build tall wooden towers using vines and branches. The central ritual is a land dive: young men jump from the tower with vines tied to their ankles. They aim to brush their shoulders against the ground without getting hurt. The jump serves as an initiation and a test of courage. Women prepare feasts and sing traditional songs below. The film also shows how the tribe makes tools from stone and weaves roofs from palm leaves. Outsiders occasionally arrive by boat, bringing metal tools and packaged food. Some elders worry that young tribe members will leave for the nearest town. The high jump remains a proud symbol of identity. The 3D format captures the tower height and the fast drop toward the soil.
